Over the past decade, Global Emergency Care has pioneered Uganda’s first Emergency Care Provider (ECP) training program at Nyakibale Hospital at the diploma qualification level—a two-year, train-the-trainer initiative designed to address critical physician shortages in rural communities. By equipping nurses and clinical officers with advanced emergency care skills, GEC has created a scalable, cost-effective model that expands access to life-saving care where it’s needed most.
Developed by GEC-affiliated emergency physicians and implemented with the support of dedicated academia and volunteers, the curriculum blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinical training. Today, this approach has led to the development of the first-ever national emergency medical care diploma program in Uganda. The new diploma program ensures that educational, clinical, and administrative leadership is continually transferred to clinicians, building a sustainable emergency care workforce for the future.
