ECPs and Ultrasound In Uganda

By: Michael Schick DO, MA, Director of Ultrasound

Each year I travel to Uganda to teach point-of-care ultrasound to training and graduated Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs) in Uganda.  As the co-director of ultrasound for Global Emergency Care with my colleague Dr. Lori Stolz, I am privileged to be involved in the education of the first emergency trained practitioners in Uganda.  Each year we continue to improve the curriculum as well as the evaluation process.  We continue to work towards remote quality assurance and improvement as well.  This year I was joined by our Global Health and Ultrasound Fellow Dr. Christine McBeth from UC Davis where she spent two weeks in Rukingiri and two weeks in Masaka.  We also visited the new physician EM residency at MUST.  A senior emergency resident, Dr. Kelly Gray, visited later in the year as well. It was fantastic to meet and work with the new ECP class in Masaka.  They are an extremely intelligent, driven, and energetic group.  They will make excellent emergency practitioners and I look forward to assisting their education for the improvement of health outcomes and equity in Uganda.
